Bulk Billed Ultrasound Services Adelaide

Ultrasound, also called sonography, is an imaging modality that uses high frequency sound waves to produce images of structures within the body. These images can provide valuable information.

This imaging technique is considered to be safe as it does not use radiation, hence why Ultrasound is often used for monitoring the growth of a child in pregnancy.

Our experienced Sonographers will hold a handheld camera-like object (transducer) which is placed against your skin. The Sonographer will use different techniques to acquire diagnostic images.

How long will it take?

Depending on the requested Ultrasound examination, it will usually take 15-45 minutes.

During the procedure

Most Ultrasound examinations will require you to lie down on a bed. The area examined is exposed while the rest of the body is covered. A special water-based ultrasound gel is applied on the area being examined. This ensures the transducer makes appropriate contact with the surface of the body. The examination is not painful, however you may experience mild discomfort as the Sonographer may apply pressure to improve visualisation of the area being examined.

If you have been requested to have an Ultrasound scan by your doctor, please contact our practice to make a booking and to confirm any necessary preparation.

For routine upper abdominal studies such as liver, spleen, gallbladder and pancreas, you will be requested to fast 6 hours prior to your appointment. Continue to take any medication.

For routine lower abdominal studies such as pelvis, pregnancy, kidney and prostate, you are required to have a full bladder at the time of the appointment. For these scans it is suggested to empty your bladder 1 hour prior to your appointment and then drink 1 litre of water before your appointment. Do not empty your bladder after this.

Prior to the procedure you will be asked to remove any jewellery, or metallic accessories as these can interfere with the procedure. You may also be asked to wear a gown.

For other Ultrasound examinations such as the breasts, musculoskeletal system, thyroid or vascular system there is no special preparation needed.

At Healthcare Imaging Services, we offer a bulk billing service if you have a Medicare card.

All cases are reported within 24 hours. If the examination is urgent, we will process the results within 2 hours to be made available to the referring doctor.
